چکیده
Graves’ disease is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism during pregnancy. Propylthiouracil (PTU) is the treatment of choice due to its relative safety during pregnancy compared to methimazole. However, rarely, PTU causes serious complications like hepatitis. We report a case of hepatitis possibly related to PTU during pregnancy complicated by thyrotoxicosis.

Management of a Pregnant Patient with Graves' Disease Complicated by Propylthiouracil induced Agranulocytosis
Relapse and exacerbation of Graves' disease during pregnancy is rare, and thionamide induced agranulocytosis is an uncommon side effect. We report a case of a pregnant woman in her 24th week of gestation that experienced a relapse of Graves' disease that was complicated by propylthiouracil induced agranulocytosis. Following the discontinuation of propylthiouracil and administration of a broad-s...

متن کاملIntellectual Development in Children Whose Mothers Received Propylthiouracil During Pregnancy
Standard intelligence tests were administered to twenty-eight children who had been exposed to PTU in utero and thirty-two non-exposed siblings. There was no significant difference in results between the two groups. The present study suggests that with careful attention, pregnant women with thyrotoxicosis can be treated with propylthiouracil without interfering with subsequent intellectual deve...
متن کامل[Plasmapheresis before thyroidectomy in a patient with thyrotoxicosis and hepatotoxicity by propylthiouracil: case report].
Thyrotoxicosis is a rare clinical syndrome resulting from an exacerbation of hyperthyroidism, with various etiology and triggering factors. Its approach may be accomplished by blocking the synthesis of hormones, their secretion and/or inhibition of their peripheral action, besides treating the triggering factors. However, in refractory cases, plasmapheresis appears as an important option for tr...
متن کاملSide effects of anti-thyroid drugs and their impact on the choice of treatment for thyrotoxicosis in pregnancy.
INTRODUCTION Hyperthyroidism in pregnancy is a serious condition and its management is complex. Whilst carbimazole/methimazole (CBZ/MMI) and propylthiouracil (PTU) have similar efficacies in controlling hyperthyroidism, their risk of side effects such as major congenital abnormalities and hepatotoxicity are different. METHODS Various combinations of the terms 'anti-thyroid drugs', 'thionamide...
